in case anyone was wondering, i can confirm that a front wheel bearing collapse is twice as much fun on a single sided front end! :mad:
luckily i was just slowing down to pull into the workshop.
so i've stripped the front end out, and one of the bearings has cracked all the way round the outside circumference! not a thing i've ever seen before.
first i thought it was coz of a bad design by me, but on closer inspection you can see grease and rust on nearly 3/4's of the cracks surface, right up to within a couple of thou of the outer edge, so its obviously been like it for a long while, and i only put them in in may. :mad:
almost a severe case of compensation.
flashback to the bearing shop........
"we stock two bearings in that size, £75 or £18."........
(looks in pocket, sees washers and fluff).
"err, two of the £18 ones please".
i'll probably take the bits in next week and try to blag a couple of new ones,
on the other hand, i was due to fit hydraulic steering over the winter, and i've got nearly all the bits i need already.........
Talking of funny front ends, Rob, have you had experience of single-sided leading link front ends on bikes?
I've been planning and collecting the bits for a funky front ended bike for years now, but haven't really found anyone who can translate me ideas into metal ... no, that's not strictly true, someone did have a go years ago, but made a complete cod of it.
The idea, y'see, is to have a single-sided front end, but it's got to be exactly symetrical with the back end - shock angle, swingarm design, everything.
Any ideas? :)

Sort o', but it was feckin' ug-lee! The two 'arms weren't remotely symmetrical and although people have built bikes using the GTS front end they're not good enough for what I want, y'know?

thats EXACTLY what i've got planned for mine!!!
i've got another single-sided honda swing arm the same as the back one, which will be run upside down at the front, so the arms on the same side as the back one, spindle the same height as the swing arm spindle, with hydraulic hub-centre steering hidden in the hub, and a rim disc. all the wishbones etc will be gone. kind of 'blood runners' stylee.
no visible connection between the bars and the wheel.
i suppose i COULD build it for you instead :D .........
.......and do something even more outlandish to mine for next year.
meanwhile back at the ranch......
seeing as illogical progression is my only means of transport at the moment, its not much use to me with a knackered wheel bearing, so 3 1/2 hrs down the workshop today, welding and grinding in 100'f and its back on the road again....

i cut the front off, made a new double sided fork to take a zx6r wheel, gave it a bit less trail, (now 3 1/2"), to quicken the steering up a bit, and she handles like a dream!!!
yes, i know there is paint all over the tyre, its better silver than kwak green, and next time i get some fuel i'l put some on a bit of rag and clean it off.

aha actually just realised, the place you want is last on the right, think theres 2 places down there, one does maybe belts and gears if I remember rightly
anyway that little courtyard is heaven, last on the right is BSL, goin and ask for shaun I think it is, tell them that you got their name form tony at visualux, they might be able to hepl a bit on the price

i wouldn't say i use them regular, but if/when i need any bearings, thats where i go.
Also their in-house hydraulics specialist is working with me on the design for my hydraulic steering. (hydraulics isn't one of my specialised subjects).
i'm away running the gate/security at a festi from tommorrow morning till monday, so i wont be at atlantic village.

yeh, i use spartans for big/complecated cnc stuff that i havent got the machinery to do myself, also JTF get the pleasure of me going in there with a big box of bolts at the end of a build to get loadsa stainless allen bolts.

That sounds exactly like what I want, mate, exactly! Bugger! I've got three bikes on the go at the moment and need to finish and sell 'em before I can start another one, y'know?

if i'm doing my own slabs, i bore the holes in a blank slab with a tank cutter, and do the rest by hand. (hacksaw and file).
i've just had a pair done at spartans for a trike i'm doing. both 2"thick, 12" centres, blind fork holes in the top one, nicely sculpted etc look the bollocks.
with spartan stuff, i just give them my proper engineering drawings and forget about them for a fortnight.

Yeah I just had a pair made by them, 2" bottom and 1.5" top yokes, look very smart but was just wondering if that cash could be put the way of someone more local and maybe deserving?? :)
basically would rather pay a biker to make the bits that some fatcat company

I ended up paying £350 for mine but thats with stainless stem and think there was also a rear axle as well that they made, sadly that was for a swing arm that I was going to use, then binned :( would only take a 150 rear, and I wanted a 200 in the rear
i paid £500 for the complete wide-glide set up, risers, yokes, stem, stainless disc spacer, spindle, stainless wheel spacers,shaved caliper mount on one fork leg and a cover for where the cush-drive used to be. at that price it was silly not to, gives me time to get on with other stuff.

had my slabs made by kev at projex ,,cradley heath,,,2"thick 14"leg centres,risers an stem,,,£500,,,,,,,,,,,got pic somewhere ov single sided front end from bike sho in brisbane ,,i,ll see if i can find it an put it on ere,,,,,,,,,,
took the bearing back to the shop, but had to buy a new one :mad: , they are gonna send the broken one away 'for analysis', then give me a credit when they get the report back. so i bought a couple of 16mm rose joints and 2 16mm high-tensile bolts as well, to replace the reliant kitten bits in the steering, (pics later), as they need shimming again :(
spose thats what you get for using 30 year old parts, then applying approx 40" of leverage force that they wern't designed to take. they've done over 2000 miles tho, and will do plenty more if i keep on top of the shims. i think rose joints look better tho, and would've used them originally if i could've afforded them at the time.

its not a show bike, only ever entered one of my bikes in a show and didnt like doing that to be honest
funny thing is that Im in essex that weekend, southend to be precise, getting married the following weekend so off to see her family the weekend before as they cant be arsed to come down here :(

Sounds pretty cool to me, having the mother-in-law over the other side of the country. no danger of a quick "popping in for a cup of tea" then staying all afternoon, and criticising everything you do!

having some family around isnt such a bad thing, for example, me and the missus only get to go out for dinner on our own maybe once every 2 months, as by the time we paid for a dinner and a babysitter its stupid money
that and the fact that I get a bill for £702 per month!!!! for child care isnt very funny, other people around us earn less but far better off as they have family looking after their kid, so they do have their uses
six hours (11-5) down the workshop today.....
first i cut the temporary front end back off

it says 'myford' on the casting.....
its well old. turn it on, spin the flywheel by hand to get the motor going, pull another lever to engage the belt drive to the chuck, and off it goes!! very heath robinson.

yeah they one and the same, in 43 I think it was myford took over drummond
