getting frame powder coated....how :confused:

do you srip the bike back to frame and then wander off to a powder coaters? Do you have to strip the existing frame or prepare the metal/ Can you roll the whole bike in and get them to strip it?

Anyone got a clue?

When i had the old 45 chop frame done, i stripped the bike and took the frame in to them.. they blasted it clean and powder coated it.. Not too many will strip the bike for you.. :D

Also most powder coaters will know a firm who can bead blast the frame for you as well

thought that might be the case :D still it's a chance to get to know the machine .. .and maybe simplyfy the wiring.


The reon I ask is cos the Rebel 450 I was going to chop , the wife now wants. But, she wants it nicely painted with metalic green on the tank/mudguards and daisies all over it ! ... and all the shiny bits need to be shiny..


Brings me onto my next question, the spokes on the wheel sorry .. not forks! aren't shiny and are covered in rust. Is it damaging to the metal to get them sandblasted?

yup, you can powder coat wheels :)

But it may crack/chip if you use tyre irons on it :o

Oh yeah, same again, just bare rims, no bearings etc.....

just to add that most places will charge roughly £80-£100 to blast and coat

avoid anywhere that does mainly shelving and garden furniture etc

lots of different types of powders etc ask what they use, when you get it back check in a hidden place with a pound coin or similar that knocking it with the coin doesnt dent or damage the powder, if so it probably not cooked properly

Little tip when getting frames powder coated or any coating if you have an threaded holes, put an old bolt in them, stops the stuff getting in the threads.

When you are putting it back together run a tap down the threads.

Don't use crappy original bolts, use stainless steel(I like capheads), with a dab of copperslip on threads. Not only will it look shiny, for her indoors it'll also come apart to fix stuff better than new.

Not strictly true - yes, Central are feckin' expensive, but there are much cheaper people out there. I had the wheels of me supermoto rebuilt with big thick stainless spokes and powdercoated hubs and rims by a guy on Visordown and they look the b*ll*x! £200 all in including carriage.

Celluose-based sprays are recommended as powder coat are basically melted polyester plastic. Otherwise to maintain it just wash and wax like a painted surface.
