View Full Version : getting frame powder coated....how
do you srip the bike back to frame and then wander off to a powder coaters? Do you have to strip the existing frame or prepare the metal/ Can you roll the whole bike in and get them to strip it?
Anyone got a clue?

When i had the old 45 chop frame done, i stripped the bike and took the frame in to them.. they blasted it clean and powder coated it.. Not too many will strip the bike for you.. :D

Just the frame mate, of you'll be told to bugger off !!
Also most powder coaters will know a firm who can bead blast the frame for you as well
(ex powder coater)
What he said.
Grav
also ex powder coater. :)
thought that might be the case :D still it's a chance to get to know the machine .. .and maybe simplyfy the wiring.
The reon I ask is cos the Rebel 450 I was going to chop , the wife now wants. But, she wants it nicely painted with metalic green on the tank/mudguards and daisies all over it ! ... and all the shiny bits need to be shiny..
Brings me onto my next question, the spokes on the wheel sorry .. not forks! aren't shiny and are covered in rust. Is it damaging to the metal to get them sandblasted?
replace them, they are cheap enough these days.

just to add that most places will charge roughly £80-£100 to blast and coat
avoid anywhere that does mainly shelving and garden furniture etc
lots of different types of powders etc ask what they use, when you get it back check in a hidden place with a pound coin or similar that knocking it with the coin doesnt dent or damage the powder, if so it probably not cooked properly
(son of ex powdercoater and inspector)
almost became his ex son when he quit there :( lost all free coating

my girls helped me spray the cbr first time round... doesn't get any more random does it :D
Little tip when getting frames powder coated or any coating if you have an threaded holes, put an old bolt in them, stops the stuff getting in the threads.

When you are putting it back together run a tap down the threads.
Don't use crappy original bolts, use stainless steel(I like capheads), with a dab of copperslip on threads. Not only will it look shiny, for her indoors it'll also come apart to fix stuff better than new.
Wheels and rusty spokes, what to do?Catch 22 I'm afraid.Could replace spokes with stainless ones or get a very nice man to do it for you http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/. not cheap though if money is a problem.
Try brekers that import bikes from dry places and get a pair of shiny wheels cheap.
Could just spray wheels matt black and swop/spoke next winter
My brain hurts,I better have a drink :)

Not strictly true - yes, Central are feckin' expensive, but there are much cheaper people out there. I had the wheels of me supermoto rebuilt with big thick stainless spokes and powdercoated hubs and rims by a guy on Visordown and they look the b*ll*x! £200 all in including carriage.

Got my frame and some gubbins powdercoated last year, Gloss Black.
Including blasting, it came to about £120 cash in the end.

Yeah, got told that afterwards. Only place in a 30-miles radius willing to do it though.
Turns out I could've sent it down to a mate, and he could get it sorted for about £50.
Oh ell, all in the past now, so fuck it. :D

As there's a few powdercoaters (or ex ones) on here I've got a couple of questions - I had my trike frame powdercoated earlier this year (lovely Cobalt Blue with silver flake in it) and was wondering what's the best way to protect the finish? Simply use a car wax on it?
Also if/when the powdercoat does chip what's the best way to repair it? I've heard some people say about touching it up with matching paint. I've also heard a vague mention of some "new" powdercoat repair method from the USA that apparently lets you melt small portions of powdercoat over chips.
Any advice welcome...

Celluose-based sprays are recommended as powder coat are basically melted polyester plastic. Otherwise to maintain it just wash and wax like a painted surface.
so you can have more than one colour in a powder coat?!
