Shovels are as reliable as the next bike mate..
They need looking after properly, but if they are, they go on and on... I would take a shovel anywhere I would take an Evo or a Twinkle. They have never let me down and always got me home... And of course they are a nice simple motor so you can fix most things at the side of the road...
The last hemi motor from Harley. Look after it mate..

That might be your experience with them mate.. and I am sorry it was...
but mine is the opposite.
If you look hard enough you will always find some folk that are unhappy with any bike..
The problem is that people buy these motors, that after all are based on a design from half a century ago, and expect them to run and be able to be treated the same as a modern motor.. and they aren't the same at all..
I know a fair few folk that have run shovels for many many years and don't have problems with them at all, possibly because they know how to maintain them properly. They really are a very simple engine. Now you need to know because the harley dealerships won't touch anything older than an Evo..
The people that have shovels long term, will usually say the same thing, that they love the shovel motor.. the torque, the sound, the vibration, even the sounds they make...the whole mechanical-ness of the thing.. Its a real motor...not a sanitised sewing machine..

well said that man!!! that is the reason why I love the new bike !!
We did visit the local Harley dealer recently and I can honestly say that not 1 bike in that place made me feel like 'yeh I want one' ( apart from the 1948 BSA advertised in the window private sale!)
to me a bike should be a bike not a fashion accessory. and after being brought up with BSA,s and single cylinder 600 panther combies this new bike made me smile !
