About the other thread and people buying into the 'scene' so to speak, well we all started somewhere....

My first memory of an interest in bikes was the early 60's, watching a Silver Norton going like the clappers between the traffic in Battersea park road, there was a pillion rider on the back with no lid, sandals long white hair and beard waving his arms slowly up and down like he was flying. I now know he was probaly tripping, but at the time I pointed them out to my mum who told me not to take any notice and to look away. ( I was about 8-9 years old)

My first 'big' bike was an old 1956 pre-unit 650 Triumph, I paid £35 for it.
It was an evil heap of ****e, I got well ripped off, the gear box had to be 'adjusted' every 50 miles (stripped threads) it would not turn right properly (bent frame- wheels out of alignment) the fastest it ever went was 35 mph any faster and it tried to a) spit you off b) vibrate your brains out c) drop bits all along the road.

It nearly put me off bikes

I can blame my brother for loving bikes, and ultimately my Dad! My Brother for giving me rides around the back garden on the back of his bantam (It was a orchard!), and me Dad for letting him have the bike in the first place. Well in that case I can blame me Mum as well! For letting Dad persuade her into letting Peter (me brother) get the bantam! It was my Dad's idea originally, as he wanted to get a bike to go to work on! He had bikes since he was 14! Trouble was there was a war on as well. And he ended up being able to fly Halifax bombers before he could drive a car!

My first memory was riding my brothers GP100 around the back garden with him sitting behind me to make sure I didn't crash the damn thing (I was 10)! Had a GS125 when I was 17, but then joined the Army and didn't pass my test until after I left. Had the most goddamn awful GSX750, which must have had a problem with the front end as it handled like ****e and Motorways were positively scary!

I started on scooters, borrowed a bike ( Z1000) to go to a Mag do on then bought me first bike ( gs650GT) which had done 250 miles with no engine oil from new, was in hundreds of bits, bought a manual and re-built it, not looked back since.

Also remember being hooked on two wheels when my uncle took me out on the back of his BSA when i was about 8 or 9, and spent all my time drawing them as a nipper

I remember my grandfather who was a WW11 fighter pilot and group captain always rode motorbikes as did my uncles, nephews, ex-husband, current husband :) So brought up with them really and wanted to be the first female in the family to ride a bike.
First bike was a really crappy moped, it wasn't a puch but something similar which I had to buy to get from Kemptown opposite Cardington in Bedfordshire where I lived to work as there were no buses in those days at 6.00 a.m. More often than not it would not make it up the hill on the way home :)
After nicking my ex husbands various hondas and riding sans license for a while Mitch taught me to ride on a ZL600 and I took my test.
Now my kids riding, 4 generations of my family have been bikers.

My dad was a rocker and owned a couple of ajs & bsa cafe racers and when I was born invested in a goldie with a sidecar to carry my mum and me in, when my sister was born I was moved to the pillion with a strap around me and tied around my dads waist, we used to go everywhere like that, I used to carry the fishing rods and the boxes used to sit in the sidecar and we used to bugger off to wales fishing for the day.....I miss my dad, he'd love the Triumphs of today....I got a lot to thank him for :)

It was simple for me, I lived out in the wop wops and needed to get to work. Started off witha 98cc Frances Barnet cost me £10 ran it until it blew up, firing the spark plug across the road. Only bike that ever did that to me! After that they got bigger and different, bought what I could afford, then went into the army, then when I came out I bought more so I could travel. Life was simpler in those days...Don't think I can remember all of them now. :D John

my fisrt ride was on the back of a norton commando, then triumph tiger with tiger skin looking seat, probably aged about 7 or 8. not many riceburners about in those days, nor helmets cum too fink of it, always been around bikes all my life.

Started on a mates KMX80, worked my way up to a Tuned KX500 (fecking lethal, but fun)

Lusted after a ZZR1100 (fastest bike at the time), got a go on one, **** meself (only ridden a Kawasaki Voyager on the road at that time), but was hooked.

I got given 3 of them once, they ran ok, but I gave them on to someone else once I tried to ride one. Appalling things.

My first 'legal' bike was a BSA Bantam D14, my dad got it for my 16th (1971), he also took it apart down the last nut and bolt, then gave it to me in three packing cases saying "You want to ride it, you put it together!"
He did help, but if it broke down I could nearly always fix it to get home.
Taught me a lot.

Me mum said don't join up, don't get a foreign bird and most importantly - no motorbikes. All boxes well and truly ticked, starting off with getting a bike. It was ****e really a CM125 but I was independent and I went everywhere on it. Then it was a 500 single and a ZZR250 and loads more besides, but I got a taste for unusual bikes especially grey imports.

So it was a natural step into wanting to customise me own. I'm still after a Honda X4 if anyone's got one.
