so, i ambled down the workshop this morning about 10ish, bikes off the road til the end of the week due to an ordering faux par by me; i'm re-making the steering 'scissor' on my bike at the mo, (the angled bit that sticks out the front above the front wheel), replacing the present 30 year old reliant kitten track rod ends and suspension linkage from a gsxr400 with a nice groovy rose jointy thing, (pics later...), but for some reason i only ordered 4 rose joints when i need 8 :o . Nick is busy doing the bodywork/filler on the ST1100 trike so we can start re-assembly on weds, and we took an order for another trike on saturday, (another ST1100, supercharged, IRS at the back and one of my wishbone front ends, (not single sided tho)). but we dont get the deposit for a fortnight.
anyway, so there i was, all fired up, with not much to do, looking at all the bits and pieces lying around, like you do...... 'theres enough here to build something' i thought, so dragged a few bits out....
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/flumpkins/Picture045.jpg

the frame had an old suzuki 400 twin in it at some stage.

i'm sure blackjack has probably posted about this somewhere, but if you are building a frame/adding gusset plates, DO NOT DO IT LIKE THIS!!...
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/flumpkins/Picture046.jpg

after fiddling about with the 1200 bandit back wheel for about 1/2hr, i decided not to use it, and set to work...
cut the hardtail off and cut out the cradle from the frame, leaving the headstock, backbone, swing-arm pivot and rear engine mounts. found an old swing-arm, (dunno what it's off), bored the spindle holes in the frame out to suit the arm's spindle, put a zx6r wheel in the back, (filed out the slots in the arm to take the spindle and modified a pair of gsxr750 chain adjusters to fit into the swing-arm). made a shock top-mount, bunged in an old shock off an ST1100.
then offered up the zx6r engine, and both upper and lower rear engine mounts lined up!! :). bunged the zx6r front end on, and mucked about trying 1/2 a doz or so tanks..
settled on one off an old Z of some sort. then found a suitable seat, and made the sub-frame out of the bits i cut out of the frame earlier, (waste not, want not). welded on a side stand and some footrest hangers, and bobs your uncle, a bike!!...
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/flumpkins/Picture048.jpg
there is enough room under the tank for all the electrix and (hopefully) the battery, so nice and tidy wiring, jobs left to do??
from the front...
take the calipers off the RF and put them back onto these forks, dig out some braided hoses and bleed 'em up. find a headlight, turn up a steering stem and find some bearings, sort the loom and the rest of the lights etc, (its B reg, so i dont think it needs indicators). put more frame tube from the bottom of the headstock back to just above the clutch, picking up the mount on the engine by the cams. make some air filters out of stainless t-strainers from woolworths, (!!), ofset the L/H swing-arm pivot on the frame, (same as on the RF) to line the back wheel up, bung a chain on, mount a rear caliper and shorten the exhaust just after where it goes 4:1, so it runs tight to the back of the footpeg and bung the little carbon can (10" long) that i've got knocking about on the end.
i know there is more, but i'm getting bored with typing now!!

so there you have it, a pile of bits to that in 7 hours.
we are shut tuesdays, so hopefully another update weds evening...

not as talented as some on here, more of a twat?? possibly!! :D :p .
my record is 2 days, from standard donor bike to finished GSX1100 hardtail lowrider, including building the frame, painted, ready for MOT. using only a MIG, a 4" grinder and hand tools. .

The bloke who was doing me Harris engine swap was supposed to have it finished at the beginning of June, but hasn't even touched it. He's only had it since December last year. :(

i think the actual sentence was a bit longer than that....

Smart matey, I'm going to clear my garage out and start building again, gonna have a hunt around for some pics of the stuff we used to build.
We built a bike out parts belonging to 400/500/550/750 sohc hondas with Vespa badges on the side panels, caused a lot of fun on Chelsea bridge.
Think there a photo somewhere.

I believe so - it was posted on to me, it being from a site beyond my mortal reach - although that appears to be the sentiment. But I think the discussion from whence it came has been done to death now.

So, just one question...

What exactly do they put in the water down your way??? :D

I really shouldn't scan read stuff while doing other stuff. I first read that as you'd built Chelsea Bridge out of Vespa parts. I was really quite impressed... :D

for the record, what i wrote was ; if you take all the blingy bits off micks bikes, and squint a bit, they're just, (probably not the right word), tele-forked harley clone chop/lowriders, its the bling that makes them note-worthy, not the radical engineering, (yokes with spikey bits are still just yokes...).

as for the water.... dunno, it must be the same everywhere tho, coz i've lived in a LOT of places....

todays update...
no pics today, i've got broardband 'issues', and am half way through swapping providers, so dial-up only at the mo.
done the exhaust, a little stainless stubby link pipe so the carbon can sits behind the footrest hanger, rad's on properly, and filled with coolant, air filters are done, and the emissions gubbins fitted onto the engine.
the front end is assembled, brakes on and bled, and i started fitting a bandit belly-pan.
had to change the shock to one off a GSXR750 of some sort, the ST1100 one was too soft. the rear caliper mount is nearly done, the frames done and in primer, it looks very 'harris-y', i started making some bits for a big brace on the swing-arm and the loom is 75% done. another 6 hours today, 13 so far. i'll try and get some pics up by the end of the week.

only a couple of hours today, bringing the total up to 15, because of other comitments, but i'm onto final assembly already!!

HEY EVERYONE, I'M BACK!!
did ya miss me?
1st things first, Tiscali are a bunch of thieving, lying gits. (better put 'in my experience', to keep the mods. happy). i'm now with BT broadband, its faster and cheaper, and the call centres are in the UK, and they don't steal over £200 from you, lie about it, then cut you off when you cancel the D/D!
right, where did we get to? (scrolls back to read previous posts...).

the re-assembly...
here's what i do if the tank i'm using looks like the fuel outlets would have trouble supplying fuel to a moped...
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/flumpkins/Picture036-1.jpg
the nice, green matching front wheel that i sprayed silver when it was temporarily in 'illogical progression' was resprayed green and the front end put on. the rest of it went well, and soon i was wheeling a finished, painted and ready-for-MOT 'harris' style streetfighter out into the daylight.
i thought i'd call this one 'illogical aggression', seems apt as it's a streetfighter, and my other one's called 'illogical progression'.....
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/flumpkins/Picture040.jpg

then, a few days later, on the thursday before 'autumn 'nabd'ness', illogical progression went clatter-clatter-clatter-quiet.

bugger.

so, to keep myself busy over the weekend i dropped the swing arm and back wheel out of the (now knackered) RF, and thought i'd put it into the streetfighter........

have you ever started something, and then wished you hadn't??
i stripped out the deep-braced 'arm and standard ZX6 rear wheel, bored out the swing arm pivot holes in the frame, (the point of no return  ), slotted the RC30 'arm in, and turned up a couple of spacers to line the wheels up. so far so good....
the shock mount on the 'arm had been offset previously on the other bike, so a new top shock mount was needed.
next job was to line the sprockets up, this required the engine to be offset 36mm to the left, which fouled the engine mounts on the frame, so i cut them off and moved them over, then turned up a complete new set of engine spacers. now the battery didn't fit, so it had to be moved to the right hand side of the engine and re-wired.
next, the combination of moving the engine and fitting a wider rear tyre meant that the silencer was rubbing on the tyre, so i had to cut the link-pipe off and re-angle it. then i found a better seat/tailpiece combination, which meant re-making the sub-frame. of course all this welding/ modifying of the frame meant a total strip and repaint....
including spraying the front wheel that i'd just sprayed green, back silver again!
all of which took the total construction time up to 32 1/2 hours, or 3 good days (!!!). costs? well the numberplate cost £9.35 off e-bay....
