Okay then,here's one for yez.....
Fitting them,no problem. However,if you have to change them, the outer races sit recessed in the head making it nigh on impossible to get a drift on them. Now I know there's a specialist tool to do this, but it isn't really worth the expense for something I'm gonna use once in a blue moon. So,does anyone know how to fabricate a tool to do the job? There was a description in AWoL years back involving an M10 bolt, nut and one or two big washers, but without pics I couldn't get my head round it.I've been told an easy way is to weld a bit bar to the race and hammer that out,but I don't have access to a welder and I'd probably burn the street down anyway!
Help!

the only time i have had to use an angled tool to remove headstock bearings is on some suzuki's.so i assume you cannot remove the bearings with a straight drift. the angled tool can be made from hardwood. just imagine a steel chisel but with a bend in it.a round solid bar will get to places were a conventional chisel won't . if it proves stuborn then either warm the outside of the headstock with a hairdryer. or stick a small bag of crushed ice against the races in the hadstock. may sound like a naff idea . but if your new bearing was just 1.5 thou of an inch to big it would be hell to fit,

Heating the headstock is an idea.I took fork seals out that way once by heating the sliders over a camping stove on a low gas,and they popped out easily.I'd previously spent a couple of hours with a big hammer and a tyre lever getting nowhere. It's not urgent,I'm just curious for when it is!

A mate of mine heated the blade end of a long straight bladed screwdriver (handle had already broken off) and put a slight bend in it. Have used it successfully on several bikes, much to the amazement of other mates.
Failing that, get a mate to press a piece of wood or wooden shaft on the drift's body and hold it in place while you hit the drift.
Which ever method you use, remember to hit the bearing in several points to try and evenly knock the bearing out.

you wanna piece of pipe which will just fit inside the outer race, saw half a dozen slots down the end, bout 2 inches deep. Get a bolt whose head is just bigger than the internal diameter of the pipe - if you tighten a nut up on it it will pull the head of the bolt into the pipe and the cuts mean it will expand trapping itself behind your race. Now beat fuck out of it in the normal manner....

Cheers m8,however,I've seen a race removal tool posted on an American forum, and now I see how it works I reckon I could fabricate something that would do for at least two times.
Hopefully.

Hi
The tool that I remember being shown was to pull inner races into headstock square.Only swopped headraces on kwaks.Found 1" round steel bar and hammer more than a match to remove them.Guess yours are plain beligerant or made differantly!
Good luck!

The races sit recessed in the steering head so you can't get a drift on 'em. However,I now know how to fabricate a wee tool,so when the time comes.......
