I know from experience of Mrs R's old bike, is that the 400 (which is four cylinder) is the sleeved down six - it was with the ZL anyroad.
500's a completely different bike. (just got rid of one of them too you see! :D)
500's the twin, not the four. It's the same as the ER500 (pileofshyte).

If it's the liquid cooled twin I think the 400's a sleeved down 500.

GPz or ZL600 engine bits should go straight on. Trust me! :D

Sounds like the agonizing tone of someone who has spent scraping/banging head fixing stuff :)

Good little bikes if you can still find a clean one. If memory serves there's also a GPX400, the ZX4 and the GPz250. I had a later ZZR250 which was pretty much the same engine as the GPz250. Go for the 400 every time.
There is also a GPz400S which is a sleeved down GPZ500S - very rare though.

I used to have a z250 Scorpion, which had the head off a GPz305 bolted on. They are the same bike, but the 305 had a fairing and not much else different.
