As far as I know you can fit HID bulbs to more or less any headlight, - seems a funny way to choose what bike you want

I fitted HID to my R1150RS but not happy with the setup. The principle is fine but not right for my bike, so going to swap it over to xenon lighting. No great hassle as it's all plug in and cable-tied-off.

My idea was to run HID dipped to save battery & improve visibility, same principle as having tube-lights in yer garage. HIDs are great for bikes that has seperate bulbs for Hi and Low beam (like the BMW-GS, friend has that setup) but the kit I got to replace the standard H4 bulb (Hi-lo combined 55W/60W) isn't great.... Half HID, half standard filiment bulb, and the HID is for hi-beam which is used a lot less.

You also need to find a space for the "Ballast Box" which is a bigger than a pack of cigarettes and quite solid and weighty...not easy on a naked bike or if you just have just a nose fairing. HID kits are normally pretty expensive as well, I just took a chance on an ebay auction and won it cheap.

I'm currently running it on the dipped circuit (with the wires swapped) so I don't get a "high-beam" light on the console all the time. That's not a good idea with the nights drawing in, hence the xenon replacement.

Xenon bulbs are similar in brightness to HID (+50% over standard) and the light is less "acidic". They cost a lot less cash, about £10-15 retail and probably cheaper online, and are straight replacements for the standard bulbs. On the downside, power consumption and the heat they generate is about the same as a regular bulb, so not great for plastic lenses .

PS Halford is doing a BOGOF deal on "super brilliance" xenon bulbs at the moment.

the hid bulbs that use a standard halogen filament for low been, and hid gas discharge in the high beam are a waste of money, because if the filament goes on the low beam side you need to buy a whole new bulb, and them bulbs aint cheap, the idea of hid bulbs is apart from being brighter is that they last a lot longer than filament bulbs, but if youve got a filament built into the same bulb as hid, it defeats the object really.
like shaun said, bikes with 1 bulb high beam, and 1 for low its worth it, but for H4 not !
o ye, 1 more thing, if you get water in the wires, or a break in the bulb wire, and you touch it you are going get a real kick, they run at around 20,000 volts  same sort of voltage as an ignition coil kicks out, but with a lot more energy !
