View Full Version : Beef witrh Dragstar starter motor
XVS1100 on an X plate - apparrently notorious for iffy starter motors. I wasn't aware of this when I bought it and still wasn't aware when the bike was struggling to start. I always though the starter was a bit weak only to have massive issues getting away from the Mabon cos it wouldn't crank the engine.
So I do not have the knowhow the dismantle the starter clutch and replace cogs /springs etc. Not to mention the fact I can't weld. I can get a replacementr for around £172 but I don'#t really want to replace like for like as it is a design floor.
Does anyone know of an aftermarket replacement I could buy? Or does anyone know of any Jap custom specialists that may know?

I believe there's an easy repair for old Virago starter motors as they were notoriously iffy. If you can find an owners forum it might be worth a shot
I thjink i'll haul my ass over to one tonight.
just been onto the VSOC forum - my eyes are bleeding.. baaahhh

about £170 seems right, the new ones are meant to be improved
the problemn with the one you have, like mine went, is not the internals its just the whole unit twists ariound like mad
yours was almost 45'
the new ones alledgedly have a better fixing lug

no it was definitely the starter
i just had to do mine Slob..........took it out n just realigned it and fitted 2 new ALLEN headed bolts.......which are made from stronger metal.....however they do that!!!........all tickety boo now.......... might be worth checkin battery as well......... if the bolts look bent, jus replace em.......
cost me a quid to do.......... :D ......hth
