hi guys,

Got an old rover turbo deisel that has weird starting problem. It is a 620 sdti with the two litre intercooled turbo L series motor.

Bear with me I have never had a deisel go wrong before and have no idea.

Put key in ,turn ignition to glow plug light bit.Light goes out, turn key to start and nothing. No click or owt  .

Other times it'll start straight up.

Everyone says glow plugs.

How can it be glow plugs. Surely the engine would spin on the key just not ignite the fuel?

Does the starting part(ie switch to starter) of derv car work independantly of ignition side or they connected by some sort of electrikery?

Anyone point me in the right direction?A derv 101 troubleshooting guide would be great!!!!! :D

Bloody frustrating when it won't start for ages.Sometimes it starts up but the fan doesn't work -related problem?

Ideas please guys.Anyone in the know pm me number if that's cool and I'll bell ya.

Cheers

Drew

if engine no spin, problem am with starter motor circuit or ignition switch.

glow plugs just heat up inside of cylinders to make derv go whoosh bang fire when engine cold, nothing more.

If fan not working, it sound like knackered wiring.

Could simply be a knackered Ignition switch.

Hi trikerdrew,
I had this with a Granada once---put key in, lights would come on, then as soon as you turned key to start--ZILCH. In my case, it turned out to be a corroded battery lead ---where cable went to the clamp. Cut off clamp-fitted new one---all ok.
You could see if it is switch by trying to hotwire it to start--or stick screwdriver across some of the contacts--if it spins motor-switch.
The hotwire bit should be no problem for you. :D :D :D

If its a key fob operated immobiliser when was the battery last changed?
Wont be the glow plugs as the engine would still turn over, if it was the starter you would most likely hear the solenoid clicking.
Just to rule things out check the condition and security of the main earth cable from battery to body and the battery live to the starter.
To check the fan (assuming you've already checked for blown fuse!) just unplug the connector from the fan switch and bridge the terminals, fan should come on pointing to knackered fan switch, if it doesnt then you need to trace back through the loom.

If you have a single wire stop solenoid on the engine all you need is switched live to the starter and ignition live to the solenoid and the glow plugs which should be on a timer.

I used to work for rover! sell it! ha sorry.
They did have problems with the remotes loosing the codes,so when you turn the key it dosent talk to the recever telling it to tell the starter to go.and to make matters worse it was an intermittant problem. Change the battery in the remote lock the car with it and then unlock it and try to start it it should trick it. but it may need the key recodeing again.

Hi guys,

Been playing with the car today.

First call, swop batteries in remote fob for immoboliser/alarm.It is a single button type.Made no difference though.Boo Hoo

Once I got back I stripped the batt leads off and cleaned them up along with the earths. Also cleaned up the the single wire to the starter as terminal was a bit cruddy.

Put a test light on the single starter wire and other end to earth.Ign on and to start position and light came on-circuit ok then!

Next check seemed a bit dumb to me but I'm being led by an idiot called Haynes.Said put one end of test light onto pos on batt. Then pos on starter solenoid, which I did and the light lit straight up.No surprise there then!!.Was spose to light up once i'd turned ign/start ruling the sol ok and the starter defunct.

Have I missed owt??

Seems like the sterter is fubarred from the above.

Ideas please guys?

ps Cheers gpz might well end up wiring everything directly if it'll do it with ecu.

cheers

Try it on the other terminal on the solenoid, sounds like you've connected to the permanent live, not the switched live.

I hate cars.

Just drove 30 mile round trip to pick starter up and swopped it over-sod all.

Out with the multimetre then :o

Loads of relays to check.Got a bag of relays so I'll replace them.

Had ign switch apart and then lost all electrics, nowt ,nadda.Put it together again and they came back up.
