Hi all,
I'm trying to wire up the sender unit so my fuel gauge works on my Trike {the tank is off a GS1000S}. This is how I have done it, I have put a live feed to one of the sender wires then the other wire becomes live and that one goes to the fuel gauge and the second wire from the gauge goes to earth. This Works, BUT The tank is then live and when the tank touches the frame it blows the fuse.
Can anybody tell me what's wrong. {Should The Tank Be Live} ??

Wotcha.
EEEK - in a word STOP.
Put the live to one side of the gauge - the other side of the gauge goes to one wire on the sender unit in the tank. I would imagine the other wire from the sender unit goes to earth.
The gauge works by earthing out. The more it "earths" the higher (fuller ) it reads.
Please don't put a live wire to the sender unit . . . . . . unless you really want to go up in a ball of flames.

as i remember you should have a live (+'ive) feed to the guage, then the feed from the gauge goes to the sender in the tank, and from there it goes to earth. seems like you might have it wired the wrong way round, you have it going to the sender, then the gauge, then earth. some of the gs models had a voltage regulator that was just for the fuel gauge too. theres a diagram of a 'typical' gs loom here,

its off an 850, but the principal is the same, and it shows the connections to be the way ive said here.

Jesus wept...unless you know what you are doing take it to your local bike shop...If you can't do that take the sender out of the tank and test it in a metal bucket of water....and thank your lucky stars it earthed without blowing up...John
