I've read in the mag what the best tubing is for altering frames but I can't find the particular mag now. I know it has to be seamless but the suppliers are asking me stuff about wall thickness.  . Can anyone tell me the best size for hardtailing a gs750 frame.

Measure what you are matching it to and get the same,or as near as you can.
Otherwise it would look odd with differing o/d

I have the OD it's the wall thickness they are asking me for that I'm not sure of
Cheers for the answer though

depending on grade of tubing, a 1.9 to 2.5mm wall cfs2 tubing will be fine :)

CFS 3 NBK.

Which is annealed and normalised.

As milled it's not keen on bending, so they anneal it to soften it.

That's too soft, but gets referred to as "bendable". This is because if you slap a gas bottle with a bit, it'll bend. Not really a good idea, but becase it's referred to as "bendable" then a lot of steel suppliers will assume that's what you need.

It isn't, what you want is the normalised stuff.

Wall thickness, even on jap frames is usually expressed in SWG numbers, matching what the factory used is OK within limits. It tends to be a bit on the thin side if you're building a hardtail and you use "conventional" axle plates. Welding 10mm plate to 2mm wall tube is a bit of an arse, getting the penetration you need on the 10mm without burning holes in the 2mm is a bit fiddly. That was why I made the box section axle mounts for the Z400. Plus they're relatively easy to make....

Typically they are either 14 gauge (which is roughly 1.9mm like Dracken said) or 12 gauge (which is roughly 2.5mm) because with SWG numbers lower is thicker (bit like IQ's really...)

Fairly obviously if you're hardtailing it, then the mods will be subjected to quite a lot more load than if you're just altering the seat rails.

What are you planning on doing to it?

the might of the suzuki motor company built your GS750 frame out of thin wall ERW...... ;) :p

I'm going to hardtail the frame (or that's the plan :D )

I understand the Standard Wire Gauge system of measurement. I just need to find the best type of tube for the hardtail so I only have to do it once

Which explains why there are so few of them left in a roadworthy condition.

Oh good.

So many people can't even do fractions these days.... ;)

How are you at rods and perches

Now that's archaic measurements.
You'l be working on an abacus next :D

A rod is the same as a perch or a pole and four of them is a chain. 10 chains is a furlong which is an 1/8th of a mile.

sorted? :D
