as per the title anyone here got experience ad knowledge with this??

starting to work out my next build, want to go for 250 or 300 rear end

found 300/40VR17 for reasonable prices, but certainly cant afford the rim prices so plan to use a car rim and make up rear hub etc etc

how close in relation to sizes is a 17" car rim to say a 17" bike rim

guy at local tyre place reckoned that car rims were smaller? and the bike tyre would just plop on and off, so have to run tubed, nut worried about that, but if this is the case how likely is rotation of the tyre on the rim???

and also what width of rim would be advised for the 300 wide bike tyre? 12"??

thanks
Tony

just had a chat with a local car tyre place and appears the wider stuff is more in the 18" dia size

but confused, hes talking about 10" wide and they fitting 285 wide tyres??

would have thought 10" was 250mm???

anyone know any good websites with the bike tyres sizes on them, dont want to find a nice car rim only to not be able to get a tyre for it LOL

Well i have a 15" Porsche wheel on my bike and have had no problem with the bike tyre other then the profile ain't quite right, you tend to run out of tread after a modest lean angle.
But that was fitted about three years ago before i began rebuilding the bike and there is a lot better choice of sizes now.
But no problems with tyre movement.

ok so 10" wide rim, what width bike tyre would I look at for that then??

I sort of assumed that it would translate to 250 or thereabouts, but it doesnt seem to work like that

just located a brand new pair of 10x18 skyline rims that can be had cheap, and want to check what tyre I could fit, and more importantly if it exists

looks like I might have cracked it

avon venom tyre page has a fitment guide and looks like 280 or 300 is back in the game :)

You can buy proper bike tyres at that size you know - not cheap but at least designed for purpose. Depends if you want any handling I suppose and if you're thinking of running a 300, you're probably not that bothered! Interesting to see how you get on though :)

tyre price and available rims that I like has forced me to change direction slightly, but going with 9x18 car rim and a 240 250 or 260 wide bike tyre

hopefully this combination will work, soon find out I suppose

then just the fun and games of making the hub/bearing/sprocket/disc carrier etc, might draw that up and farm it out, knowing me will fook it up while drilling the very last hole LOL

There was a streetfighter issue in the last year where IIRC, an Audi wheel was fitted to the rear of a GSX1100. Mate of mine bought it. Have you tried Googling? Dont underestimate the Google - even CSIs solve problems using it. (Coz it's all real, like ;) )

Try asking Steve Taylor at Taylor Made Wheels.

I'd say it was a fair bet he'd know.

He put a pair of 16" car rim halves onto a Fat Boy wheel for me, and we had a 180/16 on that. There's a difference in the rim profile between something like a Land Rover 16" wheel, and say a 16" wheel for an Escort, apparently.

Point is, they were rim halves for a car wheel, so although it had a Fat Boy centre, it had a "car" rim.

Helene's other half has an 'Arley that uses 200 bike tyres on Rover rims and he's had no trouble with that. :)

I believe that Bris at CCD has been making solid bike wheels using those bolt-together type car rims for years and they seem ok.

Uncle Andy on that same site has had a bit of bother putting a 300(I think) bike tyre onto a BMW Car rim, split two expensive tyres and nearly killed him to boot. Full story's somewhere on their forum. I'm sure he had to have the rim turned down to get the tyre on.
