Hi guys,
Seems like a good idea to use transaxle engine for short trike.
Any of yiou got an opinion about what engine would work best??
Derv motor would be cool as well.
Cheers

Well there's the Alfa Sud / 33 one which is reasonably compact, designed to have the engine in front of it, has five gears.
The Sud box has inboard discs and the hand brake works on those, the 33 had outboard discs so no handbrake. Thought the Sud calipers are a bit prone to getting fucked up when people screw the brake adjusters the wrong way and force the screw out of the body. Not cheap, you can't (or at least never used to) get the seals so it's new caliper time.
The Sud hub assemblys are bolted to the struts, so you could either do what I did with in Trike Torque, or build your own IRS set up.
A lot of Renault stuff has North/South engines with a transaxle behind the engine driving the front wheels. You'd probably be able to find a diesel version. But I've never messed about with them, so that's all I can tell you about them. Think stuff with numbers for a model name, like the 19 and so on.

Alfa Romeo. Same deal, clutch is in the transaxle so the drive shaft (all 10" of it) spins all the time.

Take a bow chaps.
Next month or so I'm going to be snooping with intent at some local scrappies.Got to make space first though.
So many projects-so little space/time/money.

The pic is of an Alfa Romeo engine and transaxle by the way, the Alfa Sud is different, it has the shafts coming out of the front of the box.......
Well, you did say "short". :D

So ,the Alfa Sud would be the same sort of length as a beetle engine at the front of gearbox, uber cool.
Which is what I wanted to begin with. But beetle bits seem to be worth a lot more than the sum of there parts -bloody air cooled nut idiots(oops I am an idiot then-nowt new there,LOL).Porsche 911 would work as well but that'd be silly money.
Out with deerstalker and magnifying glass to track sud motor down in new year.

Not only the same sort of length, but a flat four too. Albeit a water cooled one.
You've probably got more chance of finding a 33 which hasn't got the handbrake on the front wheels if IRC.

hey have you thought about a subaru the pickup used to rot like buggery and they became cheap as chips at the breakers.they were 4wheel drive but the box was trans axle nik is worth questioning on this as im sure 100%did a foto shoot with one over the years but cant be sure have seen a guard over output to rear but theyre a solid box and dont know if newer engines can be fitted tho these would be good for a short trike

Hi,
Cheers for answers.
Got to get a g/box for rover veg oil car.Scrapyard here I come!! :D
Whilst I'm there I intend to have a good search for small cc car motor.Pref transaxle layout.Open minded about that though as fuel is rocketing in price has to be tiny cc petrol or derv.Prefer something rascal size and derv.
Have to see.Could look at LPG fueling as I have a pair of carbs with the adaptor plates sat here.Ain't looking for power really.Reliablity and compactness is way forward as Essex trikes have to many problems for my liking(size, weight.Oh and SVA  ) unless 2.5 litre derv running veg oil,of course.
cheers
