Hi folks,
Does anyone know what the rules are with regard to Child seats on bike engined trikes?
I know this is a fairly broad question and will depend on what type of seating, rear axle and all that stuff, but...
That's the point, have sprog, want bike engined trike.
All help appreciated.
Cheers
Keef

what age of children are you talking about? i think its dependant on whether they can reach the pegs with their feet rather than any actual child seat. having said that though, my kids wouldnt ever go on the trike at a young age, ok for a trip round the block or to my mams, but over 5 or so miles and they were pretty fed up of the wind and cold, and thats not taking into account the rain. so i got a sidecar outfit instead, then it was only me who got cold and wet!

Thanks for the reply johnr, you raise some good points, to be honest I hadn't even considered wind and cold. Maybe one of those rain covers for trolleys could be a solution to that.
The boy is at the moment 16 months old but I don't plan on sourcing / building a trike for a year or so yet. However, I can't see him being able to reach the pegs for a while after that. The child seat, I guess would be more someway of strapping the little wriggler down whilst he is too young to know any better. No plans to do cross continental trips or anything, more short hops and little runs out on nice sunny days.

Rang local traffic branch with same question last year but for trikes in general.

There is NO law regarding bikes OR trikes and kids on back.

He did however advise if a cop reckons its unsafe they can caution you. There is no rule on seatbelts over and above what there is in general.

After above conversation I fitted a 5 point race harness to rear seat in centre. Jay is 2 1/2 and from 2 has been enjoying being on back of trike. He has a full bady rain suit and wears a bycycle helmet as a bike helmet is tooo heavy. He has baby bans to stop wind/rain in eyes and also 2 bandanas, one for the top half of his face and one for the lower half.
