can anyone give me any ideas what the best plan is here??
im in the process of building a chop that i bought off jimbob, you may remember it being for sale a while back ?? :)

to the point.!!!!!!! i have just finished widening the rear and fitted a zxr750 h1 , 5.5inch wheel running a 180 tyre, all good . now beginning to line it up to a z750 engine but chain alignment is all out and gone pear shaped.

im thinking about having an extention made for the sprocket shaft or is it best to have a total new shaft made?? or a one off sprocket??? i know there will be more stress on the box and ill need an out rigger on the end of whatever i have made.

any ideas or links that will anyone??????? cheers

A new shaft , or an extension are both going to cost serious money from a machine shop, especially as it will need to be heat treated and finish ground afterwards. An idler shaft with a second sprocket setup would be cheaper (but longer), alternatively, can you not move the engine sideways by enought to sort the chain alignment?

First thing I usually do is turn the rear wheel sprocket carrier down as much as possible to minimise to offset you need on the engine end of things.

After that it depends on how much offset you need, but easiest way is to make an offset sprocket. I.E. turn the teeth off of one sprocket, turn the middle out of another and weld them at either end of a suitable piece of tube. This is good for about 1/2" of offset, much more and stuff tends to wear out rather too quickly.

A jack shaft is an option, but its a messy overcomplicated one.

thanks all,
i think the sprocket option sounds best for me, the rear sprocket offset is about as close as it can get.engine aint in fully yet but its looking like im only goin to need another 10mm or so. i have a couple of mates in the fabrication and machining trade. think ill have a handfull of offset sprockets made up .

thanks again :D

Alternatively, you could measure it up and just get one made!

think thats what ill do . i had a one off made once before for my old bandit. wasn't too expensive if i remember rightly
also just thought that the pitch maybe different on the zed front sprocket to the zxr750 rear sprocket

think having a sprocket made would cure all these problems.then just make a support of somekind to take abit of the extra stress off the gearbox. dont want to kill the box !!!!

thanks blackjack :D

10mm isn't going to dramatically affect the life of the box. It might knock a couple of thousand miles off of the life of the output shaft bearing, but what the hell, it's probably going to be less hassle to change gearbox bearings at 98,000 miles as opposed to 100,000 than to sort out some sort of outrigger bearing set up (which would entail splitting the cases to do properly anyway).

thats ok then, thanks . the motor has only got 17000 miles on it . as far as i know anyhow . so chances are ill never have to get involved with all that anyway . thanks again blackjack , you are like an encyclopaedia of useful info :D excellent . cheers
