View Full Version : Bike has started cutting out when in gear
XVS1100 - Dragstar
filled up - ran for around 40 minutes down some lanes , slowed for some lights and the bike died as if out of fuel. I turned it ovr, no probs, revved okay in neutral. As soon as I put it in gear it died as if no fuel again.
I have checked the HT lkeads and changed one of the plugs and it's still happening. Every now and again I get a backfire and then it dies in gear.

Look at the side stand there will be a switch near the top prob on the frame.
Usually a plunger style, with the stand up the plunger is pushed in and completes the circuit.
Given where it probally is it often get stuck with all the crud.
See if it is moving in and out,if not whip it off and apart and jump the switch contacts with a bit of wire and see if that solves the problem.
You could then try cleaning the switch but i would just simply make the circuit and by pass the switch and cope with the side stand the old fashined way, remember to put it up. :D

I've had this - for me it was loose battery terminal, would start fine, rev no prob, pull away, get 50yds and nada... pull over, start up fine, rev ok, pull away, ring AA, figure it out, ring AA again to say thanks but no thanks..... worth a try....

I'll look at that because it wasn't the side side circuit ( I chopped that out) and it's not the clutch switch, i tested that. Pyro troubleshooting over the phone figured that it could be the neutral circuit.. I'll try the battery terminal. cheers

yes it did... until i took it to east leeds lions and it had a right paddy. A little star called Didz rode it off the site for me and he fully understands why she's called the stubborn b1tch - as soon as he let the throttle go a bit she stalled, i think he had to restart her about 50 times to get her out. I got on, got scared and handed her over even though his first words about the bike were "I used to have one of these, i got rid cos i kept falling off it" :D
Mine stalls when i slow down fast, sure its the carbs, but it makes no difference with mine if you start her in neutral or gear, she still has a right paddy.

I had something similar on the 650 the last time I road it. Just got back from a 60 mile trip in the very cold of last weekend. Let it stand for a few hours then took it to storage (parent garage) while we move.
4 mile journey in cold, sleet and snow.. 2 miles in stops at traffic lights, engine slowly cuts out... Starts up and get the bike to mi parents... Just a little worried.

Engine gets slower and slower until it cuts... only once at traffic lights but I'm putting down to a short run in the very cold.

Sounds more like the airhole on the tank is blocked.

is it firing on both pots, if not check the plugs/ht leads/coils and dont do what i did and manage to burn my hand :D
have you looked at carb icing?
I still haven't got to the bottom of my problem. Going to have to try Pyro's trick of jumping the neutral light so that circuit is permanently live and see if that sorts it.
Damn... maybe I'll to pop up....but need to sort my FJ out, got it running better now, have to get a front tyre tomorrow as right handers have got a bit exciting in the wet....dont look like I can afford another bike at present, unless someone out there has a spare bike I can borrow for a month?
Mine did this the other week. It cut out at traffic lights. Restarted it, let the clutch out and it stalled. Did this about ten times. Put the choke full on and managed to get it home in first.
Turned out was water and dirt in the carbs, whenever I went to pull away it could'nt suck in enough fuel cos of the crap.
