Usually on the end of the crank.
There will be sidecovers on your engine, under one of them.

ok, thanks peeps. got the left hand engine case of. wich now leads me to ask for more of your formidable knowledge. is a stator the same as a starter soliniod? the reason i ask is becouse thier is only one electric componant inside the casing and it`s not like the one i got from wemoto.
<a href="http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p100/willie2006_photos/?action=view¤t=stator009.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p100/willie2006_photos/stator009.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
and this is the one i got, it`s about 4 times larger than the one in the bike.

ok hope thats worked.
Its the wrong one then, and your carpet needs a hoover.
Nope not the same things at all.
Stator is thing that goes on the end of your crankshaft and is combined with a rotor and that makes electricity that make bike work.
Starter solenoid is a switch mechanism that sends enough electricty to your starter motor to make it spin round and start engine.
tottally different things bud.
mind you neither of those bits is a stator. the second bit (on the carpet) is a solenoid.
Can't see what other bit is. too blurry.

the stator is going to be a pickup at a guess to operate the timing system, that thing at the bottom lokos like a starter solenoid, thats more likely to be found under the side panel near the battery etc
its an electromechanical switch to allow power to the starter motor to make it turn the engine over,
maybe you got a funny accent and they got confused with starter and stator?? LOL

ok them replies werent there when I started typing, must learn to type faster
alright, maybe the blurry bit is a stator.

the bit i got is a starter soliniod, so thats what i need to locate, looked all around the battery area and nothing. gunna check behind the chrome bits on the back fender tomorrow.
if you think that carpets dirty you should see the one in me garage :D
me accent is oxfordian sounds like farmer more than ok-yar.
any how thanks for all your help and i`ll let you know more on my progress tomorrow.

your starter solenoid will feed directly from the battery, via a big thick cable..
start at your battery and follow the thickest cable...and there you go ...your starter solenoid... :D :D
as for taking off your stator casing im a bit confused...what was the original fault????
I'm still convinced that its a starter solenoid myself. there are battery terminal and starter motor terminal , follow the cables back from the starter motor.

hacky, the fault is that when i try and start my bike there is not enough power to turn the starter motor, it will turn over for about 5 seconds then all i get is a clicking noise and me battery drops from 12.5 volts to about 8 volts. the bike dose start with a push or a jump from a car battery. i can use me bike all day with no dimming of the lights but when i switch off the engine i have the same starting problems. there is no drain on the battery when the bikes running.

wouldn,t have thought it would be the solenoid..id say possibly the batterys knacked or you have a dodgy earth connection,an your lights shouldn't dim while running anyway cos there fed from the altenator.
hope it helps.. :D

Find the old solenoid (starter relay),bridge the two large poles, the ones with the heaviest cables attatched.Use a screwdriver,if the bike spins over and fires up chances are it is your starter relay thats buggered.
If the symptoms are the same as when you use the start button,it's probably something to do with either the battery or the starter motor itself.
Check the battery terminals are clean and tight, check the earth lead has a clean contact with the frame.
If the starter motor is located outside the engine casings check that it's bolts are tight as it earths through the cases.

Sounds like yer battery's shagged and not holding a charge.Just in case tho',undo every connector between and including the battery and the charging circuit (and the starter button, solenoid and the battery),give them a skoosh with switch cleaner (get it from Maplins) or WD40 and reconnect. If there's serious crap on any connector clean it up with fine wet & dry,go for a run and see if the battery charges any better. You'd be surprised how small a bit crap can feck up yer electrics.Just a thought, when you have it running and the lights are on,do they get any brighter when you blip the throttle? If they do it's doubtful it's yer charging circuit and most likely the battery.
(Got an old Suzi so well versed in charging problems....... )

If the battery's shagged it might be worth checking the regulator/rectifier. Electrex do good ones for reasonable prices.

found out why i couldn`t find the starter solinoid, it`s becouse i was trying to match it with my new one. promblem being the new one is nothing like the one i need.

ordered a new one from suzi dealer this time and a new gasket so wont be able to turn the bike over till its back together.
Borg, haynes dont do a manual for vl 125 and the suzi dealer wants £65 for one  so i`ll stick to trial and error.

One starter solenoid's pretty much like another,it's just a switch after all.
