GL1100 starter problems

It only just about turns the engine, even if I put jump leads from a big car battery straight onto the live connection on the starter body. I've taken it off & cleaned out the insides, the only thing that looked amiss was what looked like where sparks had jumped from the brush holder to the end cap - probably because of the dust from the brushes? (so I filed away a bit of the brush holder & end cap to make the gap between them a bit bigger)
Even off the bike it doesn't spin as quick as I'd think it should do, anyone got any ideas please?

im getting a wing 1100 in to break at the weekend (with a ferkin giant sidecar on it) and that has got a brand new gen honda starter motor fitted to it. but i wont have it in my clutches till sat at the earliest.
