Hullo folks, I'm after painting the pipes on me Dragstar. Anyone got any recommendations for paint? I'm guessing (hoping really) that if the chrome is keyed a bit it'll be enough for the paint to take to - is this right?

Ta for looking - any advice would be gratefully received :)

painting pipes is always going to be a thankless task. a bit like painting the forth bridge. no matter how well you do it, and how well its prepared, its going to have to be re done again and again. ive heard that black bbq paint is pretty good at coping with the heat.

Ta very much John. I though BBQ paint or the stuff they paint stoves with. You think it'd take to the chrome?

i doubt it. if only they would invent an exhaust paint made from doc martin boot soles and plastic bike covers. this is because, whilst made for the job high heat exhaust paint lasts a week or 2, fucking melted boot sole and bike cover seem to impermiable to any form of removal from an exhaust pipe!!!

trick is linishing pad (on the grinder) to key the pipe ,then high temp satin black....looks matt when cured..
works for me.... ;)

Shotblast and powercoat a la Desperate's Indian project. Company over by Yarmouth can do a matt black heat resistant powdercoat and quoted me under £100 for a complete 4-1 Sebring. Good value, good finish and will last longer. I hope! About to get mine sent off.

Thanks very much all. I'd like to do it m'self if possible, just done the rest of the paint at home, so reckon I might try the sanding/high temp paint approach. If that doesn't work, it'll be the powdercoating.

Ta again :)

I'd recommend BBQ paint too; lasts pretty well in my experience.

Works fine on pipes.Keying and degreasing is a pain ain't it,LOL

Postage included I'd guess £6 a can.More would get cheaper.

Have a look around see what you find. This came from asda in the weekly shop, several times :D

Worth a nose round superstores/wilkos etc.
