View Full Version : A bolt in the head

I've only told one person about this, as it's quite embarrasing...
When putting the head back together on my bike, I managed to snap one of the two camchain tunnel bolts (stupid little 12mm thing, that tapers in the middle) (lack of experience using a sodding torque wrench!!).
Thankfully, it snapped right on the tapered bit so there's quite a large amount of bolt over the hole.
What's the best way of getting it out of the barrels, without taking them off? (it's at the front)

put a nut over the top of the bolt, make sure everythings covered up but the nut, using a mig, weld the nut to the broken shaft, and wind it out with a spanner or socket.

nice idea if you have access to a MIG. :) I suppose Liquid Metal would do the same thing...? If so, I have some of that and it'd be less messy too!! :D

sory mate, liquid metal wont do it. you could try mole grips, or better still, try and get a stud extractor on it. its dependant on how much bolt shaft is still exposed, and what access you can get round it. welding a nut on is the best bet, as the heat will tend to help it loosen too. but stud extractor is the next best bet, followed by mole grips or small stilsons or speed wrench.

Or if you can get two nuts on,use one to lock the other and use a spanner to take it out.
If that makes sense,i know what i mean and it don't to me

The bolt is no longer in the head. :D
Thanks to my trusty mole grips - having taken off the oil cooler first, leaving it hanging down - it's sorted.
I tried putting a nut onto the bolt, but considering this bolt had no thread (all of the thread was inside the block and what was left was just ally - yep, it was one of those!!) it didn't work.
Next... let's see... ;)
