Guys, I have just found out that leaving the ignition switch on for a bit of time is bad for the coil....ooops :o didn't know this before, so now I'm thinking perhaps it's best to get mine checked.... :o

Is this something that can be done easily?
Is it obvious if it is damaged and in need of replacing?
Is it hard to replace?
Is it expensive?

...please help...

What bike is it?
You can get aftermarket coils but you have to match the resistance to your ignition system else you'll fry the whole thing.

SV650. If your bikes running ok, dont bother with it. You'll soon know if a coil's breaking down.

** edit - a coil takes a lot of stick before breaking down and yours is a fairly new bike (compared to my old bangers lol) There's no reason coils shouldnt last 20+ years. Replacement second hand ones are tenner a shot ish. Does that help?

Just for you, Clanger, a piccy of an SV650 coil assembly.
(Except yours probably won't have "front" and "rear" written on them, yet.

If you leave the ignition on, turn off the kill switch.

Pyro - will this then stop the alarm re-activating itself?? It's the only reason I leave the ignition switch on for....

Well put a switch in line with the alarm feed. Under the seat or something.

Actually I found out that Minxy's explaination was short, precise and said what I needed to know...but thanks for the long winded thing (I didn't actually read any of it...I rarely read long posts...but the thought was there and I appreciate it) :p

Real complicated option that, putting a switch inline with the positive feed to the alarm.

Then again maybe you're the sort of person who couldn't safely wire a 13A household plug.

Not really I'd take the piss to your face as well, then probably help you wire the damn thing in if you're a decent sort, who doesn't take offence at a mild bit of mickey taking. :D

I use a really cheapo alarm, that way there is 1 plug to pull if it pisses me off:D After all a bike thief who knows what he's up to will take your bike reardless if he wants to, but a cheap alarm like mine keeps stupid w****rs:mad: off who at 2 am on way back from pub try to kickstrart a sidecar outfit with no keys and such odd handling it would kill em in minutes:thumbsu: the alarm also has a neat feature that starts the bike from 100 metres off with ignition off:D Scared the living s**t out of some kids who decided it was a climbing frame a while back:D So much so one left half a cup cake on the seat as they legged it:thumbsu:
