Should not bother it if it is a small chip, the magnet going past the sensor creates a pulse, as long as the magnet is 90% there it will work.
Whats the symptoms? On a Boyer system make sure the battery is putting out at least 12.5 volts or it wont work properly. Bike will run like a dog, misfire and bad starting.

starts then runs erratic blows white smoke out of both pipes, then when you alter the timing rotor the smoke goes but the bike wont run for more than 2mins,ive a gut feelin that when i built the motor back up ive slipped a tooth on the cam pushin me timing out,i hope not

White smoke means its not burning the fuel, when you change the timing are you advancing or retarding? If you are advancing to far then you are risking damaging the pistons/valves, retarding you risk washing oil off the bores because its not burning all the fuel.

If you are worried about the cam timing take out the plugs and remove the cam cover, check that both valves are closed as the magnet hits the sensor, It doesnt sound like cam timing to me as by now I suspect you have heard the valves hitting the pistons.

Do both coils work ok? Or is one getting very hot?

Has this been stood for a while?????

Because white smoke is usually to do with water. If a bikes been stood outside, or even inside for some time, then water can collect in the exhaust pipes.

As the thing warms up it heats the pipes through and the water vapourises, only to recondense as it leaves the pipe forming steam.

Unburnt fuel/rich mixture gives you black smoke in my experience, at least with petrol engines. Jets and diesels are different.....

Blue smoke is usually burning oil, so rings, guides, overfilling the thing would be the suspect there.
