Got to lift my bike up tomorrow, to change the old slightly bent axle for a new one. I've not got a bike lift yet, so was wondering would it be safe enough to lift the bike across the frame with a piece of wood on a trolley jack, and support it under the footrest brackets with two axle stands? It won't be on there very long.

Anyone have any ideas?

Ta very much for any help :)

I do that but i put the axle stands under the frame.
You will need someone to steady the bike though.
You can if you are careful do it alone by doing one side of the bike at a time and going up i steps,as in postions on the stands.

what kinda bike, custom? big? low? I've lifted my bmw r90 like this but had the benefit of a sidecar to stop it fall over. I'd be sure to rig something up to do this. I'm assuming a centerstand is not an option, if you're just replacing an axle Id use one if fitted.

Ta very much folks :)

Reckon I'll put the stands under the frame if I can get em in Lowrider.

Matthew - its a Dragstar, so no centre stand :(

If yer working alone, get someone to pop their head round the garage door every now and again.
Would'nt want ye pinned to the floor under the bike and starving to death:rolleyes:.

:D:D:D Reckon I'd last for about two days, surviving on rats and rainwater leaking in through shed roof.

I've just remembered, last few times my thrice accursed bm needed doctoring I just winched the sod up using a rotolift winch thingy I found in a skip hung using bindertwine from the roof:D

if yer still alive

might not be a bad idea to use a couple of Ratchet Straps to help keep the bugger steady :thumbu:

just in case yer need to clump the bent axle a few times to get it out , otherwise it may fall over

Hi Oddnumber

I'm around the corner (ish) in Buxton, I have a bike lift if you are stuck, you can borrow.

I got some bargain paddock stands from car boot sale, ideal for this sort of thing, can you borrow one??

Ta very much Irishbiker, will let you know if I get stuck. Thanks for the offer, its much appreciated.

Devontony - think I've located some stands. Failing that, our shed has got some massive beams that's take the weight of the Dragqueen :)

Thanks for the help :thumbu:
