Does anyone know the best way to get an engine in and out of a bike, if you haven't got any lifting gear?

Almost put my back out lifting Mrs R's son's engine back into its frame yesterday - and that's only a bleedin' 125 twin!!!! i hate to think what I'd be like when we get Mrs R's engine sorted (we may have to swap it for a better one, or even mine if I get a good deal from the insurers, meaning I can afford a newer GT750)

See what you mean Dave, I'd never seen one until now and Mrs R had never said how they work.

that would be quite ironic!!!!

At the moment, till said insurance comes through, we are completely brassic (as always) so can't afford much - though bartering's never off the agenda (umpteen bits off a GT550, various ZL600/400 bits, numerous tents -all with pegs! and soon we'll have home-brew!)

Another option is to carefully lay the bike on its side, with the engine carefully propped and padded. Then lift the frame off the engine. :)

That would (and has been) my choice too. If you protect the frame with masking tape / rags ... you minimise risk of damage if its a spanky chop type project thingy :D

When we had to take our 750 lump out we used a trolly jack under it, it takes the weight of the engine and all you need to do is support it so it don't fall over and get someone else to move jack and manovore engine out.Did the same putting it back in. because the jacks on wheels you can turn it where you want, saves a lot of backache and swearing.
