I'm starting on my Z400 hardtail chop in the next few weeks, but i'm stumped on the rear brake. The brake arm rod rubs on the frame and exhaust. Thinking of converting it to a cable, and running it along the bottom frame tube. Anyone knows how to/has done it? I'm stripping the frame ready for coating and want to sort out any guides, fixings befor i coat it.

if you go the cable route then you need to think of it the same as say your clutch cable set up.
two levers, your brake pedal and the brake lever on the drum

two retainers for the outer cable, these can be basically two lugs with a hole drilled though them large enough for the cable to pass through.
and part of that hole drilled out large enough for the ferrule on the outer cable to slot into, there will have to be a slot cut in the lug to enable you to fit the cable.
imagine a handlebar clutch cable adjuster but fixed to the frame.
in fact make the one end adjustable to allow for cable adjustment

you apear to be running one rod from brake to drum
you could have a front rod to a lever at the rear of the engine, that lever fixed to a solid round bar running through a tube welded to the lower frame tube at 90 degs, with another lever on that side conected via a rod to the brake drum lever.
which is the method i personally would perfer as it is better than a cable
imo

bens the arm out / in until the rod misses?

get a longer / shorter arm until it misses?

get a thick (10mm min) rod and put a dogleg in it to clear the frame? this works with shallow angles only
